GCL consists of special composite geotextiles, non-woven fabrics and sodium-based bentonite with high expansibility. Sodium bentonite is filled between geotextiles and non-woven fabrics and sewed by needling. In this way, the GCL can form many small fiber spaces, so that the bentonite particles can not flow in one direction. When encountering water, a uniform and high-density colloidal waterproof layer is formed in the cushion to effectively prevent water leakage.
Sodium bentonite forms a high-density diaphragm under water pressure. When its thickness is about 3 mm, its permeability is below 8 x 10 ^ (11) m/sec. This is equivalent to 100 times the density of 30 cm thick clay. Therefore, it has a strong self-retaining water performance.
